THEORIES OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE (ARC06704)
Project 1: Contextual Study Sketch Journal of a Traditional Street
In this project we were tasked with exploring a traditional street and to identify its specific contexts that construct the distinctive place identity and socio-cultural meanings of the traditional street. All of our observations were recorded thru a sketch journal as well as a written summary. For my sketch journal I choose to explore and research on Jalan Tun H S Lee, located near Chinatown Kuala Lumpur in the City Center.
For this project it was my first time doing a site visit because of my inexperience I had to go back a few more times to collect the information needed. I am not very good at drawing but this project helped to push me out of my comfort zone and in the end I was able to do some simple drawings. This project also helped me to learn more about the traditional architecture we have in Malaysia, as well as the history of many of our forefathers. The project also reinforced my believe that conservation of historical buildings are very important.
Project 2: : Poster and Seminar-Contemporary Issues in Asian Architecture
In the second project, we were formed into groups of 6-7 members and looked at the issues we saw during our initial studies of the traditional street in the first project. We then expanded our study of the issues and identified specific issues of study and defined our scope of study. And looked into what were the main factors that caused the issues and researched into possible solutions. The findings were then complied into a Research Poster and a Video Presentation.
Before this project I had never done a research paper, even though this wasn't technically a proper research paper, we still had elements from a research paper such as an Abstract, Methodologies, Case Studies and many more. We also had to make sure we had cite everything that we had use, from the tiny pictures to the histories behind buildings. There are still a lot of room to improve in our research poster, but I am still pround of the work that was done.
